The yearly tribute to Golden Roll Productions first feature length film (Buddy Boys: The Movie) brings us to the site of the most critically acclaimed scene from the film. The scene in question is of course, "The Desert". Through out this piece, the audience will see the beginning test shoots, practice sessions and the final sequence which airs in the film. The production is hosted by Buddy Boys creator Michael W. Mowery.
The special creation is another tribute to the first film ever produced by Golden Roll Productions. Buddy Boys: Creation of the Desert Sequence is one of those special videos that come along once in a while. The purpose of the film is to capture the essence of youthful innocence and the passion of a childhood dream. This production is broken down into four main sections. The writing sessions and original test shoot, location and action camera tests, pre-film location selection and finally the desert sequence montage.
The first section is the 1990 writing sessions and original test shoot. A lot has been mentioned about the writing sessions thus far on the site. The original idea was to create an original "Indiana Jones" type film. If you listen closely, you can even hear Bill Shute refer to the film as "The Indiana Bill and Bob Adventures" during a part of this clip. The writing session brought to life a large portion of the Buddy Boys films. The desert sequence was the one concept developed the most. This section of the film is a lot of Michael Mowery talking about the conception of the ideas and very few clips. Some important clips shown here can also be seen during the escape sequence of the film. Of course all of the dialogue is different. From the available clips we learn that Bill Shute and Dave DeMatteo are the good guys searching for the "Golden Roll". Michael Mowery and Anthony Salerno are the goons trying to steal it.
The second section is devoted to location and action test shoots. By this point, there was still no script written, however there was more of a focus on what the creators wanted to capture on film. It's during this part where Bob Schoelkopf makes his first appearance on screen. The majority of the scenes here made it to Buddy Boys: The Movie. A few good sets not used but shown here were two different cliffs, a get away tarzan swing and a mysterious broken down boat.
The third section is special in that Bill Shute and Michael Mowery walk through the different shots of the desert sequence as a final preparation before the cast would come to the location. By this point, the script was written and you can hear Bill and Mike using the script scene numbers as well as making writers notes about the sets.
Finally, the entire desert sequence is shown to show how the entire writing process has come full circle. This section starts with the training montage, then goes to the arrival of the Bandits and finally the escape sequence. Also included is the scene where the T.P. Gang tricks the Bandits into going back into the Desert.
