ORIGIN
In the spring of 1990, three young men set forth on a quest to make their own motion picture. Many ideas were conceived and disputed before Bob Schoelkopf, Bill Shute and Michael W. Mowery agreed on a commonality. All three men shared a fondness for the Indiana Jones Trilogy. So this is where their film would begin. An action adventure film with plenty of heroes, villain's and larger than life locations and ideas. The foundation was laid, now came the hard part.
In the weeks that followed, Bob, Bill and Mike would travel all over the Gloucester Township, NJ area searching for ideal sets to use. There was even a planned trip to the Jersey Shore to explore the possibility of filming a few scenes in the Atlantic Ocean. When all of their searching was complete, a number of quality locations were found including a convenience store, movie theatre and yes, even a desert. Some preliminary test shoots were done by the men with the assistance of Joe McGroarty, Dave DeMatteo, Anthony Salerno and Tom Seager. After promising results of the test shoots, they agreed to write the screenplay.
Though they had many ideas in their heads, no one took charge and began the process of writing them down on paper. Instead, they filmed scenes while they were testing locations. There was little to no direction to their endeavors and before anyone realized it, the summer was turning into fall and school would be starting. All three men would attend different colleges. As a result of Mike being more than two hours away from his partners, he could not pursue the film. Bill and Bob's schedules would simply dominate all of their free time. This made it very difficult to create the film. As time went on, the movie idea which brought these men together became a fading dream.
While away at college, Mike still expressed a passion for film. After consulting on many projects with a friend, Mike was finally presented the challenge of creating his own film. Mike immediately contacted Bill to see if there was still a spark there from their original venture. Bill was ecstatic about the news and the dream was alive again.
Mike would then spend the next two months creating and writing his first screenplay which contained many of the trio's original ideas. Filming would take place during the Christmas hiatus and on certain weekends when Mike could get home. Nine months after filming began, Mike, Bill and Joe had finished their first film and in the process created their own production studio. Unfortunately, Bob was unavailable to work on this historic production.
On August 30, 1991, a world premiere showing of the film took place. The cast, crew, family and friends were invited to celebrate the debut film of GOLDEN ROLL PRODUCTIONS.
If a monument was erected to the founding members of Golden
Roll Productions;
it would probably look something like this:
